Flats are an English band that definitely goes straight to the point: anger and distortions typical of hardcore punk, no frills or embellishments. Last spring they gave birth to their debut album Better Living. For those who already know them, reading this flash interview will be an opportunity to get to know more about these guys; for all the others, well, let’s just say you’ll learn something about the meaning of the word “attitude”.
Would you like to tell us something about your origins? When and how did it all begin?
To be honest I think we have answered this question a million times and I have always wished we had a more exiting answer but our origins were very bland. We all just knew each other from being about. Parties and that then we all just decided to get in a room. And the rest is history.
What kind of message do you intend to bring to the public? In other words, what do you want to pass on with your music?
As far as messages go we aren’t political we aren’t pushing any half arsed agendas. We make angry music to suit our outlook. That’s about as deep as we get.
What are your opinions regarding the current music scene, both locally and globally?
It’s shit. Very few new bands excite me. I fucking wish someone did. There’s nothing challenging. In fact I challenge anyone to do so.
Could you describe your relationship with your label, One Little Indian?
Derek approached us and we love him. We are big fans of his band, Flux of pink Indians. That was the icing on the cake for us really.
Do you have any particular episode you’d like to share with us about your life on tour?
When we played in Nottingham I was too drunk and fell through the drum kit after being onstage for about 10 seconds. And on the same tour Craig found himself cruising in a banged out Mondeo with 2 hookers round Hull at 3 am.
Does the themes of the album concern you personally?
Yes completely. The themes are very self indulgent. It’s all about me and I would have it no other way.
Is there any song that has involved you particularly during its drafting?
Country is about me getting fucked over at school when I was a kid by a teacher that was gunning for me. I guess that’s the most obvious one to attribute.
Have you already started promoting the new album with some gigs? If so, how is the crowd reacting?
Well it looks like we are gonna start writing over the next few weeks and we are getting the new tour together so keep an eye on us to find out what’s happening.

I Flats sono un gruppo inglese che va decisamente dritto al sodo. Rabbia e distorsione tipiche dell’hardcore punk, niente fronzoli o orpelli. Nella scorsa primavera hanno dato alla luce l’album Better Living. Questa intervista lampo sarà per chi già li conosce l’opportunità di sapere qualcosa in più sulla band, per tutti gli altri un sano esempio di cosa significa la parola “attitudine”.
Volete raccontarci qualcosa sulle origini della band? Quando e come avete cominciato?
Ad essere sinceri, penso di aver risposto a questa domanda un milione di volte ed ho sempre sperato di avere una risposta molto più eccitante, ma le nostre origini sono abbastanza insipide. Ci conoscevamo tutti quanti da un po’. Feste ed altre cose, e poi abbiamo deciso di entrare in sala. Il resto è storia.
Che tipo di messaggio volete portare al pubblico? O per meglio dire, cosa volete trasmettere con la vostra musica?
Per quanto riguarda i messaggi, noi non siamo una band politica, non vogliamo portare avanti nessuna fottuta agenda. Facciamo musica arrabbiata che si adatta al nostro profilo. Non andiamo più in là di questo.
Come vedete la scena musicale attuale, sia a livello locale dove siete partiti, sia a livello mondiale?
È una merda. Poche band stimolanti. Vorrei che ce ne fosse qualcuna. Non c’è nulla di interessante. E sfido chiunque a dire il contrario.
Come vi trovate con la One Litte Indian?
Derek si è interessato al nostro progetto e noi lo adoriamo. Noi siamo grandi fan della sua band, Flux of Pink Indians. È stata veramente la ciliegina sulla torta per noi.
Avete qualche episodio particolare da raccontarci della vostra vita da tour?
Quando abbiamo suonato a Nottingham ero troppo ubriaco e sono caduto sulla batteria dopo neanche 10 secondi che ero salito sul palco. E nello stesso tour Craig si è trovato a vagare per Hull in una Mondeo ammaccata con 2 zoccole alle 3 di mattina.
Le tematiche dell’album vi riguardano personalmente?
Sì, completamente. Si tratta di tematiche molto auto referenziali. Mi riguardano personalmente e non sarebbe potuto essere altrimenti.
Potete parlare di qualche canzone che vi ha coinvolti in modo particolare durante la stesura?
Country parla di me quando, da ragazzo, ero vittima di un’insegnante che mi dava sempre addosso. Immagino che sia la canzone che più chiaramente si riferisce a me.
Avete già iniziato a promuovere il nuovo disco con qualche concerto? Se sì, come sta reagendo il pubblico? A voi i saluti e speriamo di vedervi presto in Italia!
